Anita Shah, an animal and outdoors lover, rescued a puppy in December, and decided she wanted to give back to organizations that made that possible.
Anita started volunteering for Houston Pets Alive! (HPA!) in June 2017. She liked how HPA! Was a smaller organization where her help could definitely be utilized. She decided to start fostering animals to see them through and help them find their perfect, forever home.
“Houston has an extremely high amount of homeless animals,” Anita said. “Everything we do helps save those lives.”
Anita recently took on her first Mom and Pups foster after HPA! put out a plea. As it turns out, Macy and babies have been some of Anita’s favorite to foster so far.
Anita describes Macy as a young adult Pitbull mix who is an incredible mom and sweet to any humans. She let Anita handle her babies and eats her daily pills gently out of Anita’s hand.
“I can’t wait to see her personality grow!” Anita said.
When Anita’s not fostering, she also volunteers at the Stella Link Shelter once to twice a week. Not including Macy and her babies, Anita has fostered three additional dogs since Hurricane Harvey hit. Anita, originally from Grosse Point, Michigan, has enjoyed exploring Houston by bike and visiting all the restaurants Houston has to offer.
“I foster because it directly saves a life,” Anita said. “Without fosters, HPA! would not be able to save nearly as many lives.”

Thank you, Anita! We appreciate all you’ve done to help us! Give Moose some pets from us for being such a great foster brother. Your willingness to open your home up to dogs in need, especially a mom and her puppies, reminds us why we do what we do!
